Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme
The small seaside town of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme occupies a limestone promontory, enjoying a strategic position facing the Bay of Somme (Baie de la Somme). Thanks largely to its vitally important location, Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme has a remarkably rich and vibrant history. Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme's upper town is a fabulous example of a medieval citadel, while the area behind the harbour is a tightly packed Old Town of brightly painted fishermen's cottages.
The area surrounding the Abbey has a particularly rural feel, with a number of working farms and old farmhouses. Finally, wedged between the ramparts and the sea are a collection of imposing Anglo-Norman villas. Among the attractions of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme is the Picarvie Museum, which depicts life in Picardy before the rise of the motor engine, including many of the region's traditional crafts. Another attraction is the Baie de la Somme railway, which runs around the Bay of Somme from Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme to Le Crotoy.
