Ecuador's largest city and economic capital is Guayaquil, located on the banks of the Guayas River, 70 kilometres from where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. The city is Ecuador's main seaport and is a prosperous centre for international trade.
The city has undergone a magnificent transformation over the past 10-15 years and has become a modern, forward-looking, self-governing city, with newly built urban areas and attractive city-centre regeneration projects - most notably in the Malecon area, which boasts modern shops, hotels, restaurants, theatres and bars in a redeveloped zone alongside the Guayas River.
