The city of Quito is built on top of and around ancient Inca ruins and has the distinction of being the first city to be awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. The city boasts a splendid Old Town, where preserved monasteries and churches reveal a fascinating blend of influences, including Moorish, Spanish, Flemish, Italian and indigenous styles.
The city is located across a narrow valley high up in the Andes, with the Machánga River canyon to the east and the stunning Pichincha to the west.
