Best Scandinavian Train Journeys

18 October 2024

Imagine a place where modern cities sit within reach of some of northern Europe's most isolated destinations and a corner of the world where wide-open terrain abuts mountains, fjords and breathtaking coastlines.

A land of contrasts and a region of remarkable views regardless of the season, Scandinavia is a destination in a class of its own. Because the landscapes of Sweden and Norway can be so rugged and inaccessible, the best way to explore is by train.

Sit back, relax, and watch the landscapes unfold. Here are seven of the most breathtaking Scandinavian train journeys.

1. The Bergen Railway (Norway)

An iconic route between Bergen in western Norway and Oslo, the nation's capital, the Bergen Railway offers dramatic scenery and cosy onboard comforts. This line traverses rugged mountain ranges, sweeping valleys and the breathtaking Hardangervidda Plateau, providing unimaginable views of each mile of the journey.

The Bergen Railway follows a high-altitude route past lakes and through hand-hewn tunnels, including the Trollkona tunnel, which is more than five miles long, presenting southern Norway in a memorable way.

2. Flåm Railway (Norway)

Some of Norway's most impressive scenery beckons on the Flåm Railway, a 12.5-mile branch line of the Bergen Railway.

The Flåm Railway follows one of the world's steepest rail routes from Flåm alongside Aurlandsfjord, a tributary of the Sognefjord, to the high mountain station in Myrdal. Along the way, horseshoe curves, twists and turns, and numerous hand-carved tunnels add further intrigue to this stunning rail line, which climbs at gradients of 5.5%. Just one hour of travel reveals Norway's little-seen landscapes, with waterfalls, deep fjords, canyons, and mountains framing the route to Myrdal.

3. Inlandsbanan (Sweden)

Embark on a journey through the heart of Sweden, from Kristinehamn to Gällivare, on the Inlandsbanan. This 807-mile line showcases the country's diverse terrain as it travels from the forests of southern Sweden to the remote landscapes that lie past the Arctic Circle. Keep watch for local wildlife, including elk and reindeer while travelling through the endless expanses of Swedish Lapland, and marvel at scenes of distant mountains and picturesque lakes.

4. The Rauma Railway (Norway)

Another incredibly scenic railway journey in Norway, the Rauma Railway travels along the Rauma River and through some of the wildest expanses in the nation. Venture past towering mountains, through deep gorges, across stone bridges, and alongside passes lined with thundering waterfalls and thick evergreen forests. The Rauma Railway follows a 71-mile route between Dombås and Åndalsnes. Passing amazing sights including Trollveggen (Troll Wall), the tallest vertical rock face in Europe.

Other highlights along this course include the semi-circular Stavem Tunnel, the famous Kylling Bridge, and views of Romsdal Fjord, surrounded by the Romsdalsalpene mountains. Less than two hours is all it takes to reveal some of Norway's more jaw-dropping panoramas on the Rauma Railway.

5. The Nordland Railway (Norway)

An unimaginable look at Norway's great contrasts awaits on the country's longest railway journey, the Nordland Railway. This extensive route connects Trondheim with Bodø, taking travellers past picturesque villages, sparkling fjords and the dramatic Saltfjellet mountain range.

Because its far-north route extends beyond the Arctic Circle into Norway's untamed, frigid expanses, the Nordland Railway is also called the 'Polar Express'. While this name evokes visions of barren, Arctic terrain and rugged mountains, these are just some of the wonders. With nearly 10 hours onboard the train, travellers are treated to a showcase of Norwegian scenery and seasonal wonders, including all-day sunlight in the summer months and, if the viewing conditions cooperate, the Northern Lights in the winter!

6. The Ofoten Railway (Sweden & Norway)

A look back at Scandinavia's shipping past and a route of wonder, Scandinavia's northernmost rail line, the Ofoten Railway, is a journey to remember. This 26-mile line was built to transport iron ore from the mining town of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland to Norway's ice-free seaport of Narvik. At the time of its construction, it was called the 'eighth wonder of the world'.

Today, the line captures hearts and demands attention with its rugged terrain filled with jaw-dropping fjord views, waterfalls, mountain peaks, remote plateaus and alpine wilderness. While views of northern Scandinavia unfold, travellers have the opportunity to listen to an audio guide app that informs about the region's history and the stops along the way.

7. Stockholm to Oslo (Sweden & Norway)

Urban sights and tranquil lakeside scenery guide the way between two of Scandinavia's capital cities, Stockholm and Oslo. The high-speed railway service provides a scenic link through the Norwegian and Swedish interiors, presenting a variety of terrain. As the cities fade into the backdrop, look upon suburbs and smaller municipalities. Eventually, the scenery becomes decidedly more natural, with crystalline lakes, distant hills and mountains, and rolling forests providing peaceful views. During this seven-hour trip, travellers enjoy access to comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, and food and drink options in the restaurant car.
