Day 5 - Picturesque Koblenz, the enchanting Rhine Gorge, and the spectacular Rhine in Flames

Waking up in Koblenz this morning, there's time as leisure to explore this historic city, once a Roman stronghold. We recommend strolling to Deutsches at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. From the viewing point, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking views in every direction including the two rivers and the Roman cityscape. After lunch back on board, we commence a highlight of our cruising experience - sailing through the romantic Rhine Gorge.

This section of the Rhine is renowned for its spectacular views and the best place to witness them is from the top deck of our ship. The riverbanks plunge deeper here, and we wind around bends surrounded by endless miles of lush green vineyards, ancient castles, and picturesque riverside towns. It's also one of the narrowest points of the river with one of the strongest currents.

As we sail, we hear the fascinating story of the legendary Lorelei Rock which soars almost 500 feet out of the water. This monument has been the inspiration for countless myths and legends, and we hear of them as we sail by.

This evening, we dock in Oberwesel for the spectacular Rhine in Flames procession. This event is a stunning procession of illuminated boats, fireworks and music along the Rhine River. It's a breathtaking display of colours, lights and sounds that brings together locals and visitors alike to celebrate summer nights with a sense of magic, romance and community.

The food was fine on the ship and the hotel, though only having 2 evening meals in the hotel to discover BOTH had salmon as the fish alternative for the main course was very poor. The hotel did not seem to pay attention to detail, no milk left on second day neither a bath mat. So whilst they had a fancy machine to make coffee and tea, there was no milk to put in it. At breakfast in the hotel, I was sat on my own and went to get more food, the staff cleared the table, sat someone else at it and then joined in the other guests protests when I sat down and finished my breakfast. Staff just not bothered. We were not offered upgrades on the Eurostar service and it was very squashed with little room for luggage and food was expensive and poor. My biggest issue was that we were given little or no information on the ship. Never told what country we were in or anything about the towns we stopped in. But the worst was that when passing through the Romantic Rhine, we were given a list of castles and board markers to find them. I have travelled this with SAGA and the assistant cruise director was on board because of her knowledge of the area and gave wonderful commentaries. On this ship we knew more about the Cruise Directors 'lucky shorts' than we did about the beautiful area we were sailing through. Some guides on the excursions had very poor English. The journey back was exhausting and took over 12 hours to get to London and it was not pleasant travelling for much of the time, blocked toilets and squashy seats with poor luggage space. Shame this had great potential but it was not used. A footnote. The Baggageman service was excellent and the Tour Director who took us to Switzerland was superb.
