Arosa Line
During some of our tours we take a fantastic journey on the beautifully scenic Arosa Line. The rail service is operated by Rhätische Bahn, and the train departs from Chur. On leaving the town - which is the oldest settlement in Switzerland, the Arosa Line passes close by many of its oldest landmarks, such as the Obertor town gate and the famous Maltese Tower. This stretch of the track is relatively flat, but the line begins to ascend steeply shortly after reaching open countryside; the railway overcomes a height difference of 3,280ft between Chur and Arosa.
As the train continues its ascent, the landscape becomes steadily more wild and dramatic. The track runs through verdant mountain pastures and slopes lined with thick pine forests. Soon the line passes over the distinctive Langweiser Viaduct as it spans a wide gorge. Our journey then continues through the rocky scenery of the Graubunden canton as we climb further. At this stage, the railway makes use of a series of short tunnels and graceful curves to overcome the rugged terrain. Finally the ground begins to even out as we make our approach to Arosa, skirting the crystal-clear waters of Lake Obersee. We then arrive in this charming town, which is a popular year-round holiday destination.
