We take the Blaenavon Steam Railway for a short, but scenic, journey in South Wales. Opened in 1866, this railway was initially used to transport coal to the Midlands, expanding to passenger trains in 1870. However, in the 1930's, the coal supply had begun to dry out, and in 1941 the economic strain caused by World War II forced the line to close completely. In 1983, a short, 2 mile stretch of line between Furnace Sidings and Whistle Inn Holt was opened for tourists, providing a comfortable journey in vintage carriages between the destinations, and still successfully runs today, thanks to the work of the volunteers that maintain the line.
