Eifelquerbahn Railway

The Eifelquerbahn Railway was first planned as early as 1856, but was opened in lengthy stages between 1878 and 1895, due to unexpected construction costs. Once the railway was operational, it enjoyed commercial success with both freight and passengers. Yet in the 1970s, passenger numbers began to dwindle. Deutsche Bahn continued to thin out services until in 1988, it was decided to withdraw them altogether, and the final passenger train ran in January 1991.

After pressure from some of the communities along the line, some limited tourist services were reinstated in 2001. These proved to be very popular, helped in no small way by the charming scenery that the route passes through. Owing to the initial success of these, a regular Eifelquerbahn Railway service was introduced, using restored heritage rail buses from the 1960s. With their nostalgic charm, these have become a firm favourite with visitors to the area and locals alike.
