An electric narrow-gauge railway, found deep in the valleys of Austria, the Mariazellerbahn makes the most of the impressive natural beauty which characterises this part of the world. Crossing over stone bridges and gliding past fairytale forests, the Mariazellerbahn is one of the best of the Austrian trains and its bright red carriages stand out from the green meadows of summer or the white trees of winter. Built as a steam route in 1898, the railway was electrified in 1911 and was somewhat of a landmark in rail history, with no other railway of the same length being electric.
