The route of the William Tell Express, between Lucerne and Locarno, takes us from the snow-capped centre of the Swiss Alps to the warmer shores of Lake Maggiore, in the Italian-speaking Southern Switzerland. The rail journey takes us around Lake Lucerne, up over the impressive Gotthard Pass and through the Gotthard Tunnel - at one time the longest railway tunnel in the world (now surpassed by both the Channel Tunnel and the Seikan Tunnel in Japan). We then travel through horseshoe tunnels and over bridges, eventually arriving in Locarno, where snow-capped mountains and icy glaciers are replaced by greenery and palm tree lined promenades on the northern shore of the second largest Italian Lake.
